We believe Shrek The Musical resonates so deeply with audiences of all ages and backgrounds because the universal theme imbedded in every scene and every line and every lyric is that you must be true to yourself even when your truth is different from those around you.  The characters in Shrek embody qualities that many may think are different and unusual, yet each of them learn to accept themselves for who they are and more importantly celebrate the differences in each other.

From its earliest days, theatre has been made up of people from all walks of life coming together for a unified purpose.  No other sport, club, team, or organization has such diversity amongst its participants.  Each individual’s characteristics shine through the character they play and the spirit they bring to each performance leaves a unique fingerprint on the show.  Being true to who you are is not only celebrated, but encouraged.  The fact that there is a home for all of us in theatre, no matter who we are, is what makes it so special.  Our individual uniqueness makes this such an appealing art form for many and allows each audience member to connect in a way that is both real and beautiful.  Theatre joins together cast and audience unlike anything else.  You may even see yourselves reflected on the stage.

Over the past few months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with this amazing cast and crew and all the unique qualities they bring to this story.  From athletes to writers, dancers to filmmakers, it has been an inspiration to witness so many different kids laughing together, cheering one another on and lifting each other up. Through the art of theater they have learned to come together to produce something that is so much greater than one individual. They have learned to not only accept themselves but each other for who they are and celebrate those differences together. They have truly let their “freak flag Fly!”

This story reminds us, “We are different and united, you are us and we are you. This is our story.”
