Welcome to Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors.
I have had a lifelong fascination with all things Dracula that started early in life while sitting next to my father watching Friday Night Creature Features. As for this particular version, Concord Theatricals describes it as, “Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale put in a blender with Mel Brooks, Monty Python, and The 39 Steps”. What I can tell you is that the action is lightning fast, and the experience is hopefully filled with laughter. In this production, five actors play over a dozen roles in this send-up of the literary classic.
In a nutshell, for those of you who have missed out on the original story, when her sister Mina falls ill with a mysterious disease of the blood, Lucy Westfeldt and her fiancé, Jonathan Harker, enlist the help of famed vampire hunter, Doctor Van Helsing.
Dracula: A Comedy of Terrors originally premiered as a radio play in May of 2020. The show premiered as a stage play off-Broadway at the New World Stages on September 4th, 2023. The play was first commissioned by the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and was further developed at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, the Capital Rep in Albany, NY, and at the Segal Centre in Montreal. The show enjoyed its regional premiere at The Dallas Theatre Center in October of 2024.
Now, it’s time to sit back and give yourself permission to laugh out loud, as we travel back in time to a rather kooky Transylvania, 1890s.
