Director’s Statement
Byron Nelson High School
Roald Dahl’s “Matilda”
Our Motto for this year has been “Blessed are the Flexible” and flexibility has been the name of the game for this entire year, but especially this production.
When we found out that our Performing Arts Center would be under construction during this school year, our students were extremely anxious about what the year would look like in a world where we had no dedicated performance space or scene shop. But my technical director and I were bound and determined to find ways to still be able to provide our students with a different, but incredible, year of theatre. We knew it would be difficult, but we were up for the challenge.
Fast forward to this summer, I started having some neurological issues and had to face some challenges of my own. Through it all our kids kept working. When the rest of my world was falling apart, the walls of this school provided a sense of normalcy, hope and love. This show is the fruit of that labor.
From the set to the props to the sound and lights our students have taken every challenge that has been thrown at them head-on (Including a FLU epidemic AND an Ice-Pocalypse). This process began in August and is culminating with this beautiful, magical tale. After 25 years I can honestly say that it truly is a delight to work with such dedicated and talented students and faculty who continually breathe life into this old soul. I hope you enjoy the show!
