Newsies - June 20 - June 29, 2025

Centerstage Academy

  End Notes

At its core, Newsies is a story about young people refusing to accept the world as it is—and choosing instead to fight for a better world.

Set in a time when kids were expected to stay quiet and fall in line, Newsies shows us what happens when young voices rise up with courage, conviction, and a belief in something bigger than themselves. Their strength doesn’t come from one loud voice—it comes from a community standing together. And that’s where this story truly shines.

In a world that often feels uncertain, it’s easy to forget how much power we have when we come together. But the newsies remind us: resilience isn’t about never falling—it’s about rising up, again and again, with determination and hope.

This cast and crew have embodied that resilience every step of the way. Their passion, creativity, and commitment have built more than just a show. And that’s exactly what Newsies is about: choosing each other, showing up, and daring to believe that change is possible.

A heartfelt thank you to Centerstage for fostering an environment where these incredible performers can grow, dream, and shine. Thank you to the families for being the voice of encouragement and support. Your dedication to the arts and to nurturing the next generation of theatre artists is evident in every moment of this production.

We hope this story reminds you that no matter your age, you have the power to make a difference.

And the World will know.

With these words the newsies start a generational movement for their rights, and the rights of everyone after them. Through threat of adversity and conflict, a group of kids bands together to form a union against being treated unfairly. As a union worker myself, this story holds a special place in my heart. Nobody deserves to be treated as an expendable cog in a wheel, even if you’re just a kid selling papes.

These students have done an incredible job of bringing this story to life. They’ve learned to tap, fight, walk with a crutch, sing with a cigar, and spent hours confusing their families with thick New York accents. Every character great or small has been given unique personalities by these talented actors. I’ve asked a lot from everyone this year, and they have far surpassed my expectations. Many of our roles in this show have done amazing work with deeper emotional acting than we have done before.

This is a story of adversity, struggle, triumph, friendship, and love. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of students to share it with you, and I couldn’t be more proud of them.
