Director's Note

Good evening and welcome to our production of Les Miserables. Though I may have the honored title of “Director”, the concept and execution came from myself, the other performing arts teachers and (most importantly) our students.  I hope I can convey our collective vision in a way that gives them all a voice and makes them proud.

We began with the common understanding that we wanted to highlight our students and allow the beauty of the music and story to speak for itself. We decided upon simplicity in design and repetition of motifs to highlight the timeless melodies of Les Miserables.  From a thematic standpoint, delving into the spirit of revolution and the power of unity immediately resonated with our cast, pit, and crew.

At its core, "Les Miserables" is a story of revolution - not just on the streets of Paris, but in the souls of its people. In a world still grappling with injustice it is a call to action, a reminder that no fight for a better future is ever fought alone. We live in a time of strong opinions and even stronger division. The efforts of our team on this production is a testament to the heart of Les Miserables. Yes, we are strong on our own - but that strength multiplies when we make the choice to join together.

Over the last two weeks, we have chosen to live by the philosophy born in the ABC Cafe. We, like the ABC Boys, set ourselves on a common course - bringing this musical to life. So too like the ABCers, things might not have turned out as we expected, but we know our time together will impact the world around us.

At the end of the day we are here to tell a story that ignites your passion. It is a call to action; a call to not watch, voiceless, as the poor and downtrodden are taken advantage of. To stand up and sing your song for all to hear and lend others bravery to do the same. Take a moment to see yourself in the people on this stage, in their passion, in their determination, and in their belief that together, we have the power to change the world.

To close on a personal note, I was especially inspired by how the legacy of one man can teach us the strength in gentle love and unending compassion. I see much of my dad in Jean Valjean's nature. While he has moved on from this world, his lessons of empathy and kindness continue to light my life in the darkest times. The world would be a better place if we could live by his example.

This show is for him, for you, for all who have ever loved music and above all, for our students who remind me daily that "even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.”
