 THE PLAY

SYNOPSIS

It’s the year of 1988. Anderson Hill lives with his wife, Sandra, and their two kids in a large home in Daytona Beach, Florida. Despite his position as college attorney at Bethune-Cookman College, owning a law firm, and a nightclub, he's struggling to manage bills. With past-due notices adding up, he seeks comfort in alcohol.

Shortly after, he meets Robert Billingslea, a representative from World of Sunshine, and Bill Williams, a businessman from Ohio, who is interested in the college's financial resources. With pressure from the college board to hire more minority support, Anderson feels he is the right fit and joins Bill’s team after receiving approval from Dr. Bronson, the college president. Bill offers him an advance to solidify their partnership.

However, tension rises when Sandra finds cocaine in Anderson’s pants and confronts him. Anderson soon realizes Bill has a poor work ethic and is struggling with the construction projects. After being convinced by Bill, Anderson agrees to let him lead the campus construction and signs several loans to fund their work, but soon faces payment issues and potential legal trouble.

Eventually, a bank files a lawsuit, and Dr. Bronson fires Anderson, warning him about jail time. Disheartened, Anderson drowns his sorrows in alcohol and drugs, leading to Sandra threatening to leave with the kids. The next day, he wakes up to find them gone and decides he needs to change. He flushes his substances down the toilet.

Anderson receives a call from FBI Agent Lanser regarding bank fraud charges but initially refuses to cooperate. Eventually, he decides to admit his wrongdoing and goes to trial, receiving a 10-month prison sentence. He shares the news with Sandra, who assures him their family will be waiting.
