One of the lines in "The Sound of Music" that rings truest to me is when Maria says that the most important thing she has learned at the Abbey is "to find out what is the will of God, and to do it." There is no doubt in my mind that it was the will of God that we perform this particular show this year. That fact has been proven over and over through the immensely talented students that have given their time and talents, in the extremely generous benefactors who have helped in so many ways, and in the huge outpouring of love that people have shown for this show in general. It is a classic story that reminds us all of the importance of music, family, and faith in our lives. The entire cast's love of the music and willingness to work hard on it has helped us to grow together as a family, and our faith and God's guiding hand have helped to put all of the many complex pieces of this show together.
My heart has truly been blessed with "the sound of music" this year, and it is my hope that you all leave the performance today feeling the same way. When I took the LC stage as Maria in "The Sound of Music" fifteen years ago, I was certain that that nothing would ever compare to that experience. It was an amazing moment in my life, and I never thought anything would be able to top it. That is until I directed this production. These young people are so incredibly talented, and it is such a gift from God to have the opportunity to work with them. Thank you to all of you for the love and support you are showing us by being here today. And let us all remember to thank Christ, the source of all Love, without whom none of this would be possible.
In the wise words of Henry Ward Beecher: "Of all the music that reached farthest into heaven, it is the beating of a loving heart."
