Eleanor Estes’s The Hundred Dresses won a Newbery Honor in 1945 and has never been out of print. Perhaps it’s because the book addresses ageless and relevant questions.
How do we as individuals and communities respond
to and treat those different from ourselves?
What moral responsibility do we each
have when injustice is before us?
As we watch Maddie struggle with these questions through Mary Surface’s stage adaptation of this classic children’s story, we may recognize ourselves. Sometimes it is too late for apologies, sometimes we wait too long in the shadows as bystanders, and sometimes we do nothing.
But the beauty of the story is hope.
Those who are thoughtless can learn, those who are mistreated can forgive, and those who wait in the shadows can gain courage to stand for what is right and just.
