Alice @ Wonderland - April 25

Mooresville Graded Schools

 End Notes

Thank you for coming to our spring show and my first show with MMS! I am so honored to have been able to work with these wonderful young actors. The students worked hard on what you are about to see tonight. We started the semester working on improvisation and explored various types of theatre throughout the semester including musicals and Shakespeare.

Students also explored backstage roles that were needed to help our play go as smoothly as possible. Some students served as actors and backstage crew members while other members on our team chose solely an onstage or backstage role. The entire process has been one big collaborative effort.

Being that this is a class and not an after school activity, both 7th grade classes rehearsed separetly during the school day. To give you one collective performance, one class is performing the first set of scenes while the other class is performing the second set of scenes. This means that though the characters are the same, the actors will eventually change. We hope you can keep up! Either way, it definitely adds to what we call the wackiness of Wonderland.

'Alice @ Wonderland' is a modern day version of 'Alice in Wonderland.' In our version Alice has a cell phone and Starbucks exists. When researching I found that these two things both became a part of our modern world in the 1970s. Our version of the story also requires the characters to dance at just the mention of the name, 'Wonderland.' With that, we thought it fitting to pay homage to the time period that gave us constant accessibility and tasty caffeine that keeps us as energized as the white rabbit. When we dance, we dance to 70s music of course.

Introducing disco music to the students and highlighting the difference between 80s music, 90s music and 70s was a blast. One particular song you will hear often because it seemed to fit our play so well. Other songs were included simply because students wanted to incorporate 70s music that they already liked. With that, we hope you enjoy our, 'Boogie Wonderland!'

Thank you to all the parents, staff and administrators for your support. I want to give a special thanks to Patrick Kosal, Ron Higdon, Alan Sledge, Tabitha Richardson, Kathleen Johnson, Joy Miller, David Benfield, the MMS Elective Team, MHS for hosting us, the Little Theatre of Winston Salem, you the families, friends and guradians of our cast and crew for all of your support as well as my family, my Mom, Husband and children for helping me out behind the scenes and putting up with my constant chatter about class and rehearsals. It's always a great day to dance, to let your imagination run wild and in the words of Mr. Kosal, 'it's always a great day to be a Red Imp!'
