 The Directors Notes

Welcome to The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!

This show’s original Broadway production was the winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the country with its effortless wit and humor. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny, and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience.

We hope that you enjoy this riotous ride, complete with audience participation, as an eclectic group of mid-pubescents vies for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing stories from their home lives that range from hilarious to heartbreaking, the tweens spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Spellers enter; one speller leaves a winner!

At least the losers get a juice box.

Thank you so much for being here. We are ready for an audience!!!

After a year and a half of cancelations due to C-O-V-I-D, this cast is ready to take the stage and get in front of the audience. Last year was heartbreaking as show after show was canceled or shut down. However, amid all the chaos, with hope and determination, this group of young performers auditioned at the end of last year, and they started rehearsals on the very first day of school so that our performances could happen before our fall break.

And then Homecoming was moved!

Therefore,…if the schedule for this show was inconvenient since it had to be moved to a Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, we are so so so very sorry.                                                             We just really want to spell for you!

Now, sit back, feel free to laugh out loud, and applaud hard!                                                                     It’s time for the bee!!!

Thank you,
