“Theatre contains a multitude of worlds, each requiring a unique set of creative and esoteric skills. These separate spheres of expertise combine and fuse, as a string of notes become a melody, and melodies intertwine to create a symphony. In this way, theater creates a synergy – a result greater than the sum of its parts – a harmonious, living production,” (Shenan Arts, 2018). Once again, no words can begin to express the deep gratitude I feel to the many individuals who have come together to make this work possible. It is a privilege to collaborate with a team of such talented and dedicated professionals and students who share a passion for the stage. Our common goal is that for a few hours you will escape reality, and transcend to an alternate world where life is enchanting, obstacles seem impossible, and life is both heartbreaking and heroic.
A well known celebrity of my childhood, Kermit the Frog once said, “It’s not easy being green.” This is also true for Shrek who is often relegated to the role of a monster because of his outward appearance. At the heart of Shrek the Musical is the journey of self discovery and the powerful magic that our individual quirks and flaws have in defining our beautiful, unique character once we own them. While the lessons of self-acceptance, inner-beauty, true friendship, inclusion, and reserving judgment may not be new, they are more important than ever in our today’s image-conscious and isolated world. Today, judgment is not only passed in the school hallways or grocery store lines, but is heightened to a whole new level with social media, where messages are sent and received through a screen that reflects nothing but appearances. This beautiful story reminds us to never strive to be the same type of perfect, but celebrate that “what makes us special makes us stronger.” No matter who you are, no matter what might adorn your “freak flag,” remember to “raise it up way high!”
To our talented student actors, technicians, and musicians - your enthusiasm and commitment to your craft inspire and amaze me! You have poured your hearts into the preparation of this ambitious production. It shows in every note and choreographed step. Much appreciation to the parents of all of our performers for encouraging and supporting your students to pursue their passions. I am so fortunate to have had the lifelong support of family to pursue mine!
We invite you to enjoy tonight’s performance with and open mind, joyful heart, and imaginative spirit. “This is our story.”
