The War of the Worlds: The 1938 Radio Script - November 07 - November 08, 2020

West Catholic High School

 End Notes

Notes from the Director:

WOW. What a time to be a theatre director. Theatre is an art form that highlights and plays with human connection; something about the shared experience of watching actors play other people for an hour or two has a way of bringing people together. The power is in the shared experience. This year because of COVID-19 and our inability to gather together, theatre has ceased to exist for a lot of schools.

Clearly, that is not the case here at West Catholic. In the beginning of August, before school even started, I was met with a crew of teenagers eager to audition for West's first ever radio play. No one knew just what it would look like, but everyone was eager to start, myself included. Thus began a rehearsal process unlike any I have experienced. I wondered how needing to physically stay 6 feet apart would impact the bonds the cast would form with each other. I needn't have worried. Despite the tape squares on the floor, the masks on their faces, and some virtual quarantined rehearsals, this cast quickly grew together and worked diligently to pull of a great show. WHat you hear tonight is the result of full commitment from each of them, and I could not be prouder of what they have pulled off.

Everything may look and feel different than what we are used to, but these students still managed to create a fantastic production. As of right now, I don't know what the future of theatre looks like, but I do know that I will do my best to make sure West Catholic students get the opportunity to perform. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!
