A Beautiful Glass - June 10 - June 25, 2016

A Note From the Directors

It’s tragic when someone, someone young especially, takes their own life. The loss saddens us deeply in ways difficult to express. The act confuses us. It frightens us, too, because there is no one single cause, one single reason people resort to such extreme measures. It’s one of Life’s “Why?” questions that can’t be answered adequately.

But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep asking.

We did extensive research and study in creating, “A Beautiful Glass,” and, in the process, we concluded that live theatre is indeed one of the best places to explore this topic. In a play we can give breath back to these people and let them speak for themselves again. “A Beautiful Glass” examines people who’ve taken their own lives and portrays them with all their strengths and foolishness. We have strived to fully humanize them, see and understand and celebrate these people in new ways beyond their obituaries. It has been an honor to do so.

The ATNU cast, crew, musicians, composers and instructors have worked terrifically hard in workshopping this play into production. It is an emotionally taxing theme, as one might imagine, but they’ve taken to the task with a passion and professionalism that is very inspiring. They are a collection of wonderful people, truly remarkable, and we love each of them dearly.

And thank you, too, for participating in this play. The more often we open up and talk about suicide with frankness and honesty, without casting blame and stigmatization, the better we’ll become at healing those among us who struggle with suicidal ideation.

Always, if you need help please reach out to others. No matter what problems you are dealing with, we want to help you find a reason to keep living. By calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255) you’ll be connected to a skilled, trained counselor at a crisis center in your area, anytime 24/7.
