Director’s Note:
Welcome to the show and enjoy, as we invite you into the mind of Mary Girard. We begin our journey in a hospital in 1790s Philadelphia, as Mary awakens to find herself surrounded by the Furies, spirits which look to drive her to insanity. The Furies guide Mary through her past, present, and future, allowing her to explore her place as a woman under the circumstances in which she is living. The rights of women are called into consideration as Mary struggles against the entrapment she faces due to her circumstance. Many devices are used to accentuate the overarching theme of women’s rights, but due to the context of the time period, religion is a very key component of the story. Please take note that these religious undertones are only used as a means of expressing the theme of women’s rights (or lack thereof) at this time. There is no intention to offend anyone of any religion or to influence anyone’s beliefs. Any mentions of religion are used merely as a channel to help explain Mary’s struggle throughout the show. So join us as we set off into the crevices of Mary's mind and explore not only her sanity, but the struggle that women all throughout time have faced.
Thank you! We hope you enjoy the show!
