Long Ago and Far Away
I realized in 1988 that something about being onstage and committing to other actors was life changing. That was the year of my first project with Steve McCurdy, and I remember like it was yesterday. Since that time I have heard Steve direct, rant, laugh and cry (lots of crying) about a million times, all the while marveling along with him at what amounts to blossoming souls. When I came to St. Luke's in 1996, we wasted no time in applying that "MiracleGro" to young people, but found it difficult to know how and when to jump in with adults. Now, through the efforts of many, we have launched The Tapestry Players, living into what had to have been the dream of Dr. Walter Underwood all those years ago when the Rotunda Theatre was merely a blueprint. It hasn't been easy, sleuthing out what to do and how to do it - birthing a new ministry never is - but to focus on the challenges would be to overlook the veritable garden of gifts we've been given: A huge number of talented, eager adults, a church that worships in and through the arts, and a theatre in our building. So, just a twist on a parable...God says to us on that last day, "Where are those talents I entrusted to you?" We are able to answer, "Here they are, Lord. We call them 'The Tapestry Players.'"
