 THE DREAM: A SYNOPSIS

ACT ONE

Our story begins in the real world with a real problem. Rehearsals for upcoming Gala performances of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream are not going well for director Polly Highgate at Athenian Girls' High School. They had high hopes because of the selling point of having performers who coincidentally have the same names as the leads in the show, but their good fortune seems to have ended there. Hermia is trying to navigate the additional problem of an overly-strict father who is determined to control not only her personal relationships, but also her future. When the students branch off to rehearse in the nearby woods "for authenticity", they wander into a place where magic and enchantments might not just be part of the script. Oberon the Fairy King and Titania the Fairy Queen really are in a feud over a small changeling boy, and these teenagers end up caught in the middle as they intercept some of Puck's misplaced magic. Helena is the only one who recognizes these enchantments...but what will she be able to do to stop it?

ACT TWO

As Act Two begins, three of our teens are smitten with the wrong partner, and poor Nick is still trapped in the head of a donkey. Titania has unknowingly been enchanted to fall in love with this young man in donkey disguise, and the teenage couples are all completely mismatched from their original state, just like in Shakspeare's story. While Oberon enjoys this mischief, he knows eventually he must set about making things right, returning everyone to their original identity and allowing them to pursue the relationships that they truly seek within their hearts. As balance is restored to their lives, the Mechanicals are the only ones who get a chance to take the stage for the Gala performance.
