First and foremost, I would like to thank you for being here and buying a ticket to the show. Jesus Christ Superstar is such an incredible musical, both musically and emotionally. I wanted to take the time and space to address some of the "problematic" aspects of this production and show...
I understand that a lot of people find it off color or in bad taste, but I truly belive it is all in how it is presetned to an audience. Yes, I as a director will agree, some productions like the famous movie and a couple others following after that, are sadly leaning towards the more campy, trippy take on the story. Which, unfortunately, puts it in a bad light. But as a cast and crew, we have worked so hard to make this production one of praise, respect, and truth.
We have set the story in a modern time, with the undeniable forces of things like our powerful media, government, and corporations. One of the greatest lyrics in the entire show is "If you'd come today, would you reach the whole nation?" And thats exactly what I wanted to do. Show this story unfold in the setting of today's scary world. I believe this makes everything more relevant, while pulling you away from the campy, 70s rendition you're used to seeing and hearing. We really leaned into that more modern, punk rock aesthic, driving the emotions of the characters and story more than ever!
While this is a sometimes raw and intense production, it is also one of the most beautiful stories to be told. The counter parts that play into each other, create a musical event that cannot go unwitnessed. It demands your attention, your empathy, your hatred, your love, your everything. Because that's what this story is about. It's about everything. This cast has gone above and beyond to bring you this story, in it's full intensity and beautiful glory. Witness the last week of Jesus's life, through the twisted perception of Judas, presented through the genius mind of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Witness the glory of Jesus Christ Superstar!
