Children of an Idle Brain - June 15 - June 30, 2018

A Theatre Near U

 End Notes

True, I talk of dreams, which are the children of an idle brain…”

                                                            Mercutio, from Romeo and Juliet

We asked Alexa (therefore it must be true,) “Alexa? How many hours does the average person dream in a lifetime?”

She answered, “The average person dreams two hours per day for a total of sixty thousand hours in one average human lifetime.”

Two hours per day? That’s more time than a Frenchman spends eating. Sixty thousand hours is almost forty-nine dog years. Dreaming must be pretty, pretty important. And every living creature does it. Must be important.

What’s more, did you know that your body doesn’t know the difference between dreaming and being awake? If your dream is scary, your body reacts with true fear. Dreams about love produce genuine feelings of love. While you dream, you are, for all intents and purposes, alive in another reality.

This play, Children of an Idle Brain, is about reality — it’s a look at the countless, unavoidable other realities that infuse our own, personal, version of it. For while we are indeed all sharing these fleeting moments together, no two of us, be it microbe or blue whale, is experiencing this ride in the exact same way.

A Theatre Near U strives to offer strong ensemble productions that examine challenging and provocative topics. Our aim is to draw youth theatre, and our audiences, away from formulaic fare so regularly offered elsewhere. If we are successful we will have provided an opportunity for this art form to expand and evolve.
