Director's Note
When I first saw Disney’s "Teen Beach Movie", I told my husband, "This would make a really great onstage musical." I felt a connection to the show mainly because of my childhood obsession with the 80s movie "Back to the Beach." There was really nothing quite like it, entwining the elements of cheesy 60's surf movies in a contemporary world. I saw a commonality between "Back To the Beach" and "Teen Beach Movie."
"Teen Beach Movie's" music and choreography was so infectious, that it has turned out to be a Disney favorite amongst the kids of this generation. So, I decided to revamp the screenplay into an onstage musical version. With some alterations and lots of patience, I worked in the music and changed some of the characters to fit an onstage rendition.
My students embraced the idea of this production (and the changes!) and it has overall become a favorite amongst the Acting Up Mainstagers.
This production has given me the opportunity to include the ensemble throughout the entire show, as I usually try to do in all of my productions. I love that I can incorporate everyone and yet still showcase each actor’s strengths and talents individually. Not to mention they all have so much fun working together as a team.
Sit back, have fun and enjoy the surf and the silliness of "Teen Beach Movie!"
