Director's Notes

“What if I told you you could change the world with just one thought?”...

As I sit down to write my notes for this production, we are in the middle of our winter storm week off.  We have just been notified that we will not have school (or rehearsals!) again for the third day tomorrow, which would normally make me a bit anxious as a high school musical director.  However, I’m so blessed to have an amazing cast and crew in Big Fish, and know that the work they have been doing and will continue to do until the performances (when you will be reading this) have paid off and that the show you’re about to see is the culmination of their hard work and determination.  This dedication for the show is humbling to see, and while I’m always thankful for the extra time, allows me to rest a bit easier here at home.

“What’s next is all anyone needs to begin”...

Big Fish was not a story that immediately came to mind when I was selecting shows last year.  But once I started down the journey of discovering these characters and this story, I was immediately drawn in and became obsessed with it.  I think back to our first cast read through last semester, when almost everyone around the table was in tears, moved by the beautiful story, and how it touched all of us in some profound way.  I knew at that moment that we had chosen the right piece for these students at this time.

“With a story in your heart, you won’t need any other choice.”...

This is my third year at All Saints’, and I finally feel at home with the students.  This theme of ‘home’ has continued to resonate with me this year, and this show is another example of that.  The students have put this story in their hearts, and I know as you listen and watch you will be taken in by it just as we have been.  Thank you for coming and sharing this experience with us, and may you be taken on your own journey tonight…
