The year was 1972, I had moved to Michigan from Pennsylvania in December of 1971. Teachers were being laid off in Michigan, and a friend said, “Let’s go to law school.” She went to law school but, I chose to be a substitute in Clawson and Troy.
Nancy Stern was going to cast the first play at Troy High, Athens was still being built. I offered to help, she asked if I could come that day and help cast YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU to be performed at Troy Union. 50 years later I directed the same show in honor of that first play.
52 years later we are performing SHREK, a musical Gino says has my song, The Story of My Life, not because I’m a fairytale character but because of years working with many “wonderful” characters,(students).
I am so fortunate to have a life full of wonderful students, many who are still my friends, and so many are colleagues. But the true heroes of my story are the team that I am so lucky to have had working with me for so many years. Gino’s creative genius has provided incredible sets along with Steve’s magical carpenter skills.
Laura has crafted beautiful original choreography. Ashley has created a chorus of singers from Heaven, with this show also wigs ,makeup, publicity, program. Kari and Deanna help in so many ways, costumes, concessions, and parades. Marilyn and Karen take care of everything else, business, tickets, costumes, dinners, parent volunteers and Me.
Thank you to all the parents and patrons over the last 52 years who have supported their children and this program. I also wish to thank our Superintendent for his support of this program and all Arts in the district.
Please enjoy the show!
