Notes from the Directors
Spring Awakening has always been “that angsty musical where innocent, naive, privileged school kids go and cry together”. However, when exploring this musical at Bard, we were able to look at a new and alive version of this dark story. We wanted to lean into Spring Awakening’s comment on identity and look at these character’s struggle with their true identity vs. the identity thrusted upon themselves. By casting an ensemble of grounded, hardworking and FIERCE actors we were able to find this version of Spring Awakening with care and excitement. It has been a pleasure watching our ensemble lead with their most joyful selves and break down barriers of cynicism, doubt and apathy and rise above challenges of frustration, exhaustion and discomfort. To my cast, take this experience with you. The story you have been able to tell is absolutely authentic. We are so proud of you. To whoever is about to watch our version of this show, get fucking ready, this isn’t the Spring Awakening you know and love. I love our show and thank you to everyone. I have had the pleasure to work with.
If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant.
Onward and Upward,
Jake
This show is traditionally viewed as a coming of age story for a male protagonist, and felt particularly limiting. For us, Spring Awakening is about the intricacies of stepping into one's true identity despite the pressures of a society focused on inhibiting individuality. Through this incredible process, with a beautifully generous cast, we have been able to explore the personal and witness the show bloom into an honest narrative about self. Woot woot! Our Spring Awakening is, at its core, and ensemble experience, and we hope that the extraordinary camaraderie of the piece is as clear to you as it has been for us while making it. I feel immensely lucky to have worked with such a dedicated and innovative group of actors. Thank you all so much for telling your stories with such empathy and vulnerability every single time. It has been truly wonderful to watch. To the audience, welcome to our wacky and thrilling reimagined spring. Fuck outta here, winter! Here's to looking forward into a new season, full of truth.
With the utmost love,
Ella
