The original Broadway production of Hairspray, based on John Waters' 1988 comedy film of the same name, opened on August 15th, 2002. In 2003, Hairspray received Tony Award nominations in 12 categories, winning eight, including for best musical, book, score and direction. The production ran for more than six years, closing on January 4, 2009 after 2,642 performances. Hairspray has also had national tours, a London West End production, and numerous foreign productions and was adapted as a 2007 musical film.
