Notes from the Director

Every year, for the last five years, I have felt fortunate to join with my students to tell the story of Ebeneezer Scrooge's transformation and redemption. And every year I am genuinely moved when we get to the end and see Scrooge find his humanity and humility again. What a hopeful lesson this is to know that we always have the possibility to do right even if we may have strayed from that path.

In a culture that feels increasingly adversarial and stratified, Scrooge's ephiphany - that we truly are our brother and sister's keepers - is one that, if adhered to, could help bring more kindness to this world. That I get to share and tell this story alongside young people who will be our next generation of parents, teachers, leaders and citizens - in essence, our keepers - feels like a privilege, a responsibility and a necessity. Dickens tells us that Scrooge becomes "as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man as the good old City ever knew." It is my sincere hope that that "may be truly said of us all" especially the young people who will carry on after us.

I am humbled this year to have so many alumni return to The Farm to tell this tale again. I am equally humbled to see so many patrons return year after year to accompany us along Ebeneezer's journey. This story is important, this venue is special, and the magic we have created telling and witnessing this story together capture what is the potentially transformative power of sharing stories together as a community.

I want to express my gratitude to the Sharpe Family for providing this venue to us, to all of the parents who have supported their children (and me) in this crazy theatre venture through the years, to all our patrons for making what we do matter, to our principal, Matt Sherman, and my colleagues for always being our cheerleaders, to Julie Rusell for making sure we have music at the Fezziwig Party, to my dear friends, The Craig Family, for their love, support and many, many meals, and to my own Aunt Miryam and Uncle Marvin who have come all the way from Florida to see this show but mostly who have been the shining example in my life of true generosity and giving care to those who need it the most.
