The Game - January 30 - February 01, 2025

Bonsall High School

  Synopsis & Thanks

Synopsis:

The Game, by Louise Bryant, is a one-act morality play that explores themes of life, death, and human purpose. Set in a symbolic realm, the play introduces two central characters, Life and Death, who are engaged in an eternal game of chance to determine the fate of human souls. Two young mortals, referred to as the Boy and the Girl, are brought before Life and Death. They represent hope and innocence, yet each faces a moment of existential reckoning - doubting if love exists.

Life, a vibrant and nurturing figure, emphasizes the beauty and potential of existence, while Death, somber and inevitable, underscores the finality of human destiny. Both seek to claim the souls of the Boy and the Girl. As the game unfolds, it becomes clear that Life and Death are interdependent forces, and the Boy and the Girl must decide whether they accept the responsibilities and struggles of living or embrace the release of death. Ultimately, their choices reflect humanity’s universal questions about purpose, courage, and the meaning of life.

Bonsall High School senior Nonyi Usua adapted this public domain play as for the Bonsall High School Theatre Company modernizing its language and staging while preserving its timeless exploration of moral and philosophical dilemmas.

The play has been patiently directed by two first time directors, Kali Morris and Kayla Lopez.
