DIRECTOR'S NOTE

When choosing 12 Angry Men for this year's play I thought long and hard about whether this show was a good fit for us. Would this be relevant for us today? Would the students rise to the occasion and be 12 very angry people? Once I decided yes, it was important to me that we have both men and women in the show, changing its name to 12 Angry Jurors. Even though the show was written in 1954 it is still so relevant for us today, dealing with topics such as prejudice and racism within America. The idea that we all come into situations with preconceived notions about people and how things should be done was a key part of my vision. The actors and I worked really hard on the idea that this is an ensemble piece. Everyone is on stage is it was important to show their characters through the silent moments. We did a lot of deep dives into their characters' past and the time period for which they are in. In 1954, women would not have been allowed at that time to sit on a jury, but what if they were? What sort of jobs would they have? How different would their point of view of the world be? How would that reflect in a room of men?

I believe that as you watch you will see a small piece of yourselves in these characters. I believe that is what makes this show so special. The audience can connect to it and are hopefully able to see how they can make a difference in our current world.

To our technicians who worked very hard on this show, coming up with ideas (though sometimes shot down) for different aspects of the show and making our set, lights, sound, poster, costumes, and hair/make-up all unique to our production; to the cast who created characters that are three dimensional and intriguing to watch; to stage management for being there everyday and getting the job done––thank you for your time, your ideas, and your dedication to our department. Luu, thank you for handling the things that I did not have the mental capacity for and just being one of the best people to work with. I couldn’t do this job without you!

Sincerely,

Alison Dimino
