Directors notes:
This has been quite a journey for us at BCHS. It’s been such a pleasure to see how these young actors and crew have taken this tale and made it their own. We are so proud of the entire cast and crew.
Big Fish is a modern example of magical realism. At its center are Edward and William Bloom, father and son, whose troubled relationship is riddled with outrageous tall tales told by Edward and recalled by Will. A few stories are realistic truths, some are exaggerations, and our tale here includes a vivid imagination: a humble giant, a devoted wife, a dedicated doctor, and a dreamlike town. In many ways, the setting for this show is very much like our little Nashville. Big Fish blurs the line between fantasy and reality and questions what it means to live—and die. We are allowing you as the audience to view the story and to experience the world that Edward has created, but you have to be willing to believe in the unbelievable…
This bears the question…do you believe?
A few days before opening night is when there’s that moment of it all fitting together and we then have come together as a group, then we realize we have a show, and then that’s very exciting. Humans loves stories, and we have achieved the zenith of storytelling with this perfect show and this absolutely terrific cast and crew. Love carries us through this journey, and it now extends to you as the audience. Enjoy it. Embrace it.
