Disaster, The Musical - November 21 - November 23, 2019

Burley High School Bel Cantos

 End Notes

"It sure ain't AIDA!"

Last year's production really soared the heights of what Bel Cantos can do dramatically. This year, it was time to see how they would rally in the face of their toughest challenge yet - a musical comedy. And not just any musical comedy - one that has its tongue so firmly planted in its cheek that you can see it from the back of the theater.

Comedies are always seen as fun and natural and well, easy. But comedy is anything but easy. If the timing is off, it's not only 'not funny,' but also sometimes even a little painful. So many gags and jokes require the timing to be exactly right. (Oh what a ride it has been assembling this bit of lunacy.) Hopefully the laughs fly by and you'll leave feeling a little giddy from the loss of oxygen. (Okay, so maybe that's a little too much to hope for.)

But we do want you to leave singing your favorite 1970s music. You'll probably start giggling in your seat hearing the songs coming before the music even starts.

Maybe you'll just recall your favorite disaster movie with some nostalgia (and definitely some guffaws.) There's just so much to take home and enjoy - including souvenirs. We hope you won't forget to make a donation through purchase of a water bottle and/or chips for playing in our "just for fun" casino (set up in the lobby.)

As always, there are so many people to thank that trying to do so in this small space would just mean that I'd forget someone - probably someone really important (like my wife, Denise, who directed this show with me.) Christine Rowley, Connie Wood, Tim Wood, Becca Tateoka, Brandon Cook, Adam Cook and Paul Pugh are so great to join us in this venture, and some of them are so crazy, they're back for 2nds, 3rds, and even 4ths. Almost forgot to thank the adults (Thanks Ed Gomm!) who helped with the set construction and the Bel Cantos students who painted and hammered and cut out to make this whole thing work.

On this end of the hall, we're always thankful for our administration and the support we receive from the District office. BHS has a great faculty, and so many of them encourage student participation by offering extra credit. I wouldn't want to forget all the members of the community who purchase advertizing and donate a variety of "stuff" as well as all of you who buy tickets and sit in the seats and laugh uproariously. Please enjoy the show and thanks so much for your support.

Our various BHS Music Program Christmas Concerts are coming soon, so be on the lookout.  For these kids, it might mean re-enacting some of the music from tonight.  Tough turn around time in less then 2 weeks.

Also, be on the lookout for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" slated to hit the KFAC in February.  Mr. Fisher has lost his mind. so if you see a slightly deformed gentleman running around with it, let us know.  Dusty is bring his directing skills to MHHF this year as well as he directs for the first time for them.  "While retaining all of the music from the beloved full-length cartoon, this is not a cartoon...it's a little dark" is his warning.  So be warned!
