Director's Notes:

"You Gotta Have Heart"

I cannot think of a more important message for this time and place. Apathy is running rampant. We teachers see it increasing in our students, their parents, and ourselves as well. There's a disconnect that is so prevalent. The simple act of caring for others, putting others' needs before your own is becoming rare. Looking up from your screen and seeing how your actions or words affect others.

They call the lessons that theatre teaches "soft skills."

Teamwork, Communication, Problem Solving, Responsibility, Persistence, Resilency.

Whether on stage or backstage, Theatre requires all these qualities from everyone.

And there's nothing soft about them. They are hard.

But nothing works, nothing is learned, if you don't care.

I have seen the emotions these students have when things go wrong or when things go right. As a group, their passion and dedication is far beyond expectations. To watch them grow and learn and succeed is truly a gift I will always be grateful for.

Dedication

In 1980, Manoa Valley Theatre, then the Hawaii Performing Arts Company,

produced Damn Yankees. There were two young girls named Karen working on that show. One, born and raised in Honolulu, was working in the HPAC office. The other, fresh from Buffalo, NY, had only done a handful of shows, now finding herself costuming a huge musical with limited knowledge and resources.

But lucky for her, the two young women founded a lifelong friendship.

This production is dedicated to a dear friend Karen Brilliande.
