Centennial High School Theater Department –
Purpose Statement and Goals
The purpose of the theater program at Centennial High School is:
• To develop a life-long appreciation and understanding of the art and skills involved in performing and producing a theatrical production and to appreciate the qualities of excellence in the theater arts.
• To develop the individual creative skills and talents involved in performing and technical
theater, to develop emotional and sensory awareness, and to instill a sense of confidence in the use of those skills and talents.
• To develop an understanding of and appreciation for the values of teamwork, tolerance, respect, perseverance, humility, and commitment, and their value in the production of excellence in the theater arts.
The goal in choosing the plays selected for performance is:
• To challenge and develop the skills and talents of the students and expose them to high-quality theatrical literature and musical theater material.
• To be appropriate for the talent and experience level of the students involved in the program at any particular time.
• To expose the students and the school community to a variety of authors/composers, time periods, and theatrical styles, so that, as much as possible, students and the school
community get experience with a variety of authors, styles, and periods during their high school careers.
