Hairspray - March 27 - March 29, 2015

Charlottesville High School

 End Notes

We are so thrilled with our choice of musical this year, and how beautifully it fits our student talent!   Hairspray is hugely popular with audiences, who associate it with upbeat music, fun period dancing, engaging leading characters and colorful costumes. And, there is something so satisfying about a story which features an atypical family and an atypical leading lady who wins the heart of the heart-throb.

What many might not realize about Hairspray is that, at its core, it is about integration and acceptance of difference.  I was drawn to the musical initially by its powerful theme of the struggle for equality, so intrinsic to our culture and heritage as a nation. Set in the sixties, Hairspray has incredibly powerful production numbers which feature a strong African American/Black presence. This musical reminds us all of the need to embrace our differences, to move forward together as one, rejoicing in the spirit that makes ours the great country that it is.

We promise that you will be moved not only in spirit, but in body as well! Welcome to another journey with theatre CHS. I am confident that you will exit the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center energized, enriched, and excited to return again!
