Note from the Director
“To the world we dream about, and the one we live in now.”
This quote from Hadestown speaks to the optimism within this tragic tale. As Hermes reminds us, “It’s a tragedy,” yet within that sadness, there is hope—hope for something better, for a different outcome, for the possibility of change.
Bringing Hadestown: Teen Edition to life at Chautauqua Lake has been a beautiful journey, filled with challenges that have led to remarkable moments. Every step of this process has been shaped by the dedication and creativity of our students. Our set was designed and built entirely by students under the guidance of Manufacturing teacher Dan McCray, and two students collaborated with me to design the custom microphones for Hermes and Hades/Persephone. From props to tables, I loved stopping by the manufacturing room, pretty much daily, to see their progress, discuss the function of the set, and watch the design process evolve.
At its core, Hadestown is rooted in Greek mythology, yet its themes feel strikingly relevant today. It prompts us to reflect on the challenges in our world, the choices we make, and the consequences that follow. This show has been an incredible collaboration, and I am so proud of the work our students have created.
Grateful for the team I have to work with here at CLCS. A special thank you to my husband, Jim, for his striking lighting design, and to my music department colleagues, Katie and McLain, for their invaluable help in rehearsals. Your talents and support have made this production truly shine.
