This past May I had already agreed to take on the task of directing Sweeney Todd: School Edition, so I went to see the full Broadway production with several other CTSMD families. And as I sat in the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York after the show, completely dumbfounded, I thought to myself, "Aly, you've completely lost your mind this time. This is Sondheim....with CHILDREN??!!"
Then, we began the rehearsal process. And I was reminded once again that if given a truly grand opportunity and proper coaching and guidance, a company of passionate kids will ALWAYS rise to the task....and so they have.
What has been most impressive is the work ethic the cast has acquired. This ain't your average "sing-along-to-show-tunes-in-the-car" kinda thing. Sweeney Todd, as most of Stephen Sondheim's work, is hard. It's multi-layered and dark and hysterical and gut-wrenching and sometimes nearly impossible to comprehend. These kids STUDIED this score. They learned how to listen. They worked in vocal groups and supported one another. They tackled this monster like I've never seen a cast go after something. It was truly awe-inspiring to watch unfold.
Sweeney Todd is, in fact, a dark comedy. So, let yourself be taken away on this twisted, hilarious, beautiful journey of fate. And please understand that laughing in the midst of darkness IS OK!
I'll sign off with some of Stephen Sondheim's lyrics from this show. They perfectly sum up how *I* feel about every single kid who walks through our doors at The Children's Theatre of Southern Maryland, but also how we want YOU to feel this evening while you're on our watch:
Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around.
Nothing's gonna harm you, no sir, not while I'm around.
Demons are prowling everywhere, nowadays.
I'll send 'em howling, I don't care, I got ways.
No one's gonna hurt you, no one's gonna dare.
Others can desert you,
Not to worry...whistle, I'll be there.
Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while,
But in time...
Nothing can harm you, not while I'm around.
Cheers & Applause!
