Almost, Maine - October 23 - October 25, 2014

Cincinnati Country Day School

 End Notes

FROM THE DIRECTOR…

ALMOST, MAINE is a quirky show. I read it a few years ago, and I’ve been waiting for the right time to trot it out and share it with the CCDS community. While it isn’t necessarily on the list of “classics” that may come to mind, it is quickly on its way to earning that status. As one of the most frequently produced plays of the last decade, it even overtook “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” a few years ago as the single-most produced play in American high schools.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud…” This quote from 1st Corinthians could also work in this show if we added, “Love is weird. Love is silly. It does not always say the right thing, it is not always smart.” The vignettes in this show share all sides of the crazy emotion called love. Some end well. Some do not. Some…well, who knows. John Cariani has crafted an evening of theatre that lets us in on a glimpse of “Love, Northern American Style.” (Bonus points to you if you get the reference.)

Many thanks to all of our young performers, who have handled both the simple and the complex in this script with open ears and eyes. They are handling situations and emotions that we adults are even now still struggling with, and they listen and react with expert attention. As always, they make me very proud.

Finally, thanks to all of you, for taking time out of your lives to support these kids, and the arts here at CCDS. Thanks for visiting Almost, Maine.
