It seems quite fitting to be doing Oklahoma as my final production as a drama teacher before I retire. It was the very first musical that I ever did when I was a freshman in high school. Little did I imagine way back when as a very nervous and inexperienced 13-yr-old (I was too scared to even do a voice and acting audition. I stuck with what I knew and that was dance.) that I would spend literally years of my life “treading the boards” in some capacity or other. I’ve come full circle and what a wonderful circle it has been. Sure, it can be stressful and very time consuming, but I think the time I have spent as a drama teacher (I was an academic teacher up to 7 years ago) has been some of the most rewarding. The arts allow those kids that don’t shine academically to be successful and what a treat that is to observe.
I want to thank the wonderfully talented and dedicated cast of Oklahoma for providing me with a laughter-filled experience through these last few months. You guys are the best! This is also one of the most student-produced productions I’ve ever done and it could only happen with this amazing cast and crew. I would like to end with some personal thank you’s:
To the Barney family for supplying their four wonderfully talented children in the last two musicals. I’m not sure we could have done them without you. Good luck at your new posting! Some very lucky drama teacher is in for quite a surprise!
To Eun Biy: If only I had enough money to hire you full-time as a personal assistant for life!
