 DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to First Date, a musical that explores the thrilling, awkward, and ultimately heartwarming experience of embarking on a first date. It’s a story that so many of us can relate to—the vulnerability, the excitement, the uncertainty of trying to make a connection in a materialistic world that is constantly pushing us to show up as something we’re not.

First Date takes a seemingly simple scenario—a blind date—and transforms it into a riotous, emotional journey. From the moment we meet Aaron and Casey, we’re taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. They’re both carrying their own baggage, fears, and expectations. The bar and dinner table become the setting for not just an interaction between two people, but a mirror into their past, future, and innermost selves.

This musical thrives on its humor, but it also asks us to reflect on our deepest anxieties about love, connection, and identity. The show cleverly uses its supporting characters—appearing as the voices inside Aaron’s and Casey’s heads—who allow us to see the many sides of each character’s inner turmoil. The fast pace, witty dialogue, and infectious songs not only provide a sense of fun, but also create a deeper emotional resonance. First Date shows us how sometimes the most unexpected connections can lead to profound change.

My approach to this production was to find the balance between comedy and vulnerability. This cast is not only talented, but is deeply invested in these characters. I am proud of how each actor has brought their own personal touch to the story. The result is a show that isn’t just about two people on a date—it’s about every one of us trying to navigate the tricky waters of relationships, self-perception, and the hope that somewhere along the way, our “next leap will be the leap home.”

Thank you for joining us on this wild ride. We hope you laugh, cringe, root for Aaron and Casey, and maybe even recognize a little bit of yourself in their journey. In the end, First Date isn’t about love at first sight; it’s about the leap of faith we all take when we open ourselves up to something—or someone—new.

Enjoy the show!
