When I was in high school, we performed Godspell. My teacher believed we should read the source material, so we read the Gospels. At that time, I was not a believer. I strongly believe that reading and performing the scriptures that are in the production is one of the main reasons I was saved.
The musical is based on the Gospel of Matthew, with a few sections pulled from Psalms, Luke, and John. Many of the parables are presented, along with the calling of the disciples, Jesus’ baptism, and His crucifixion and resurrection. A number of the songs used in the play are taken from older hymns and set to modern music. The show is a wonderful way to bring Jesus’ teachings to life.
Godspell was originally written by John-Michael Tebelek for the purpose of showing the joy of living for Christ. Our production reflects this intent, emphasizing the scriptures that make up the dialogue and songs.
We chose our poster colors because they reflect what Jesus has done for us.
- Black represents our sin. “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23.
- Red represents the blood Jesus shed to save us from our sin. “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith.” Rom. 3:25.
- White represents the purity we receive through Him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.
Thank you for coming and seeing our show. Our prayer is that many will be saved and encouraged by watching this performance.
God bless,
Irene Miller
