Director's Notes
Kate Hamill's Pride and Prejudice is a popular, fast-paced, and irreverent stage adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel...known for its modern, theatrical take that emphasizes comedy, energy, and protofeminist themes while staying true to the original story's heart. The play reimagines the story with a focus on the absurdities of courtship, featuring a spirited Elizabeth Bennet determined to avoid marriage and a Darcy who is initially seen as arrogant, exploring their evolving relationship with humor and depth. Hamill's version is praised for making the classic tale feel fresh and relevant for a new era.
I hope that you enjoy our rendition in which I have tried to honor the playwright's intention
and still pay homage to our beloved Jane. Thank you for your support of the
Cumberland Theatre and this talented cast and crew!
