Director's Notes:

Pippin is a deceptive play.  It mixes pleasing visuals and charming characters with uneasy truths just below the surface.  Pippin, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse (Chicago and Cabaret) with a score by Stephen Schwartz ( Godspell and Wicked),  opened in 1972, and went on to run for 1,944 performances. The show has since become a staple of regional and community theatre. Despite its origins in the world of 1972 with references in the script to Charles Manson and his followers,  the play questions our ambitions in a way that feels relevant in this age of social media fame, political discord, peer pressure and rising rates of unhappiness.

How do we find a life with purpose? A life that feels worth the journey? Must it be found far from where we are? Does distance inherently make things better? Or can it be near us already? Is a life with purpose not visible because it is obscured by mundane things like laundry, buying groceries, paying the bills and trying to find a good time?

There is a line in the play that goes:

"We can make the new day bright."

We can.  So here's to new beginnings.  To fresh starts.  To aspirations to do better with the time we are given.

Thanks for coming to Dallas High Theatre tonight.  We are happy to have your support.   We look forward to seeing you for the Advanced Theatre student directed production of The Magic Treehouse: Knights Before Dawn coming up next, followed by Romeo and Juliet after the start of the new year.
