ABOUT THE MUSICAL
Crazy For You, the 1992 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, evolved from Ira and George Gershwin's musical, Girl Crazy (1930) which played for 272 performances at the Alvin Theatre in New York City. This initial version of the musical made Ginger Rogers and Ethel Merman stars overnight.
Decades later, the musical was then adapted by writer Ken Ludwig and director Mike Ockrent for Broadway. Crazy For You opened on February 19, 1992 at the Shubert Theatre and ran for an astonishing 1,622 performances.
The story focuses on Bobby Child, the son of a wealthy banking family in New York City, who travels to Deadrock, Nevada to foreclose on a theater. There, he falls madly in love with Polly, a postmistress. To win her affections, he must compete with Lank Hawkins, the owner of the town hotel, as well as figure out a plan to save the theater. Crazy For You juxtaposes the glitter of Broadway in New York with the old-time, dusty haze of a formerly bustling mining town.
