At Lady Olivia's house her uncle Sir Toby Belch gets lectured on his drinking by Olivia's gentlewoman, Maria.  Sir Andrew Aguecheek arrives with a plan to win Olivia's heart.

Viola, dressed as "Cesario", arrives at Orsino's court.  She soon becomes Orsino's favorite and trustworthy page.  Orsino asks Cesario to go express his love to Olivia.

Feste amuses Olivia as Malvolio disdains the servants. Cesario (Viola) woos for Orsino, but Olivia falls for Cesario, and sends a ring.

On another part of the island, Sebastian, Viola's presumed drowned  twin brother, lands on shore with Antonio.  Sebastian mourns the loss of Viola then decides to go to Orsino's court.  Antonio reveals he cannot go, he has enemies there.

Malvolio finds Cesario and tells him he left a ring behind.  Cesario denies leaving it.

At Olivia's, Sir Toby and Sir Andrew carouse late, Maria enters to quiet them. The pompous Malvolio storms in and reprimands them all, so they plot revenge: Maria will drop a letter, making Malvolio believe Olivia loves him.

At Orsino's home he continues to listen to music with Cesario. They discuss the pangs of love, Viola finds herself falling in love with Orsino.

In Olivia’s household, a subplot begins as Sir Toby,  Sir Andrew, Feste the fool, and the maid Maria drop the letter for Malvolio, which says Olivia loves him,  wants him to wear cross gartered yellow stockings and smile excessively.

Olivia confesses her love to "Cesario" (Viola), Viola rejects this.  Sir Andrew - who has come to woo Olivia - grows impatient and jealous of Cesario, says he is going home.  Sir Toby convinces him to stay and challenge Cesario to a duel.

Malvolio comes to Olivia, behaves bizarrely, wearing cross gartered yellow stockings and smiling, which leads to his unjust imprisonment as a madman.

Olivia gives Cesario (Viola) a necklace.  Cesario insists she cannot love her.

Sir Toby and Sir Andrew challenge "Cesario" (Viola) to a duel for Olivia's love.  As they fight begins Antonio enters and defends Ceasrio, who he thinks is Sebastian!  (Got it??!)  An officer enters and arrests Antonio, as an enemy of Orsino.  Antonio asks Cesario, thinking he is Sebastian, for the money he gave him.  Cesariois confused but gives him a few coins.

Sebastian enters and is mistaken for Cesario.  Sir Andrew and Toby, thinking he is Cesario, call on Sebastian to draw his sword.  Olivia enters to break up the fight and requests Sebastian go into her house.  He willingly goes with her.  Maria, Toby, and Feste have put Malvolio in a jail and taunt him. Mavolio asks the fool to help write a letter to Olivia seeking her help.

In the street, Olivia meets Sebastian and, mistaking him for Cesario, proposes marriage. He, bewildered but smitten, agrees.

All characters converge, leading to the unraveling of Viola's disguise as Cesario and the subsequent resolution of the love triangles. This culminates in Orsino's proposal to Viola and Olivia's acceptance of Sebastian as her true husband, while Malvolio is released and vows revenge.
