Once Upon a Mattress - March 07 - March 15, 2014

Delavan-Darien High School

 End Notes

Directors Notes

In spite of Mother Nature, the cast, crew, and vast numbers of supporters of Once Upon A Mattress came together to bring you this performance. It cannot be said how much all the efforts of those involved are appreciated. This show is not typical of the type of show Delavan-Darien High School is known for doing. We tend toward very modern shows. Once Upon A Mattress is a very old fashioned show in that some of the music and dance is unnecessary to help tell the story. Being written in 1957, it has elements that feel almost Vaudevillian. It wasn't until the 1960's that the first true modern musical (Roger's and Hammerstein's Oklahoma) was born. In a modern musical all elements of the performance are needed to convey the story. Then why did we chose this show? We spend many hours choosing our shows to fit the needs of our potential leads. This show felt right for this year's cast. So sit back and enjoy this retelling of The Princess and the Pea story that propelled Carol Burnett to fame.
