During World War II many tube stations were used as air raid shelters. While very helpful to Londoners during “The Blitz” they were not always a guarantee of safety.

  • 13 October 1940 a German bomb fell on Bounds Green station killing 16.

  • 14 October 1940 a bomb hit the road above Balham station and penetrated the tunnel 9 meters below. 64 shelterers and 4 railway staff lost their lives.

  • 11 January 1941 a bomb penetrated the booking hall of Bank Station killing 111 people many of whom where sleeping in passageways and on platforms.

  • 3 March 1943 an air raid warning siren test coupled with the test firing of a new type of anti -aircraft rocket caused a loss of 173 people including 62 children when there was a crush attempting to take shelter in Bethnal Green station.

We honor those 368 with our performances.
