[dreamer] project: an Undocuplay is a documentary theatre piece created from interviews of San Jose State’s undocumented students from January 2017 – August 2019. I’ve included two fictional characters and have framed the true stories in a classroom at San Jose State or Diablo Valley College or any college classroom. Playwright Candido Tirado helped me develop this script and I am indebted to his wise counsel and his keen ear. Please read his eloquent note, his words capture the emotion that everyone involved in this project from Spring 2018 to the present, feel about these incredible human beings.
The play focuses on the continuing journeys of these young people from Mexico and Central America, and the issues surrounding them as they seek to find a place to belong in the United States. By showing the challenges each faces as a college student, as well as their personal stories of childhood and family, we come to know them not just as “undocumented” but rather as human beings navigating an extraordinary time in our history.
