Little Shop of Horrors - April 26 - April 28, 2024

Discovery High School (Newton, NC)

 End Notes

A Note from the Director:

I want to let all of you know how extremely proud I am of the cast, crew, and the entire production! A Theatre Production is not only an artistic learning experience but a personal one as well. This is my second year teaching Theatre at both Newton Conover Middle School and Discovery High School (my fifth year teaching overall). Even though this is only my second year here, I have already seen tremendous growth and dedication from my students in the Theatre Program!

When choosing what the Spring Musical would be, I found it very important for the school as a whole to decide. I sent out a link to the whole school having them vote on which musical, out of four, was their favorite. They decided on Little Shop of Horrors! Although this musical has a smaller cast, the students were all very excited and up to the challenge to build four different Audrey II Plants!

When directing a show, one of my main goals is to give as many opportunities to students as possible. Because Newton Conover High School does not have a Theatre Program, I give students who go there the opportunity to audition for our Spring Musical as well. A truly successful production, however, involves much more than what is only seen on stage! I also like to give as many Leadership roles to students as this makes the production more meaningful to them and a great learning experience.

Melinda, who is playing Seymour, asked if she could Musically direct the full cast, which is no easy task. She spent many hours teaching students their individually singing parts, making recordings for the students to pratice at home, and lead vocal warm-ups at the start of rehearsal.

Makayla Lampton asked to be the Stage Manager and Choreographer. One could say that the Stage Manager is the most important role in any production. They are in charge of writing down all the blocking (movement) of each character in the show and is the right hand man to the Director. Makayla has done this flawlessly and with perfection.

Catalina Contreras asked to be the Set Designer as she plans to go to UNCG to study Art. Everything painted has been designed by her. She also took leadership on coaching the other students on what needed to be painted and completed to finish the set.

To Mrs. Lawing- (Art Teacher at Newton Conover High School) Thank you for volunteering to be in charge of creating the Set and Props as well as supervise and lead the students who stayed afterschool to paint/create the set and work backstage! I couldn't do all these productions with out you!

To My Cast and Crew- I am SO SO PROUD of all of you and your continued cooperation, mutual respect, level of commitment, and teamwork skills. I know how challenging it can be to learn and do all that is required of a production with a short amount of time and experience but all of you continue to blow me away! I hope I get to work with each and every one of you again!

To the Parents/Guardians of all my Cast and Crew- THANK YOU! Without your continued support this would not be possible! It is such a joy to see each and every one of your children shine in their own unique way!

TO MY SENIORS- I am so sad I only got to work with you all for a short amount of time but I am so excited to see what the future holds for all of you! I love all of you and will miss you all dearly! Don't forget how amazing each of you are!

Love your Drama Mama,

Ms. Isaac
