Every few years, a group comes along that doesn’t just want to perform...they want to write the whole story. We began with long-form improvisation exercises and generated original characters. One day, someone suggested, “what if the entire show takes place in the school bathroom?” With the help of FAU Theatre Lab’s Jill Carr, the class wrote their first monologues based on this setting. Characters from those monologues were paired up to then create short dialogues. When these scenes were presented to the class, we noticed common themes of school gossip, side hustles, and school lore. When those scenes were put into small groups, the world of our play began to take shape. What you are seeing tonight is the result of hundreds of hours worth of careful and thoughtful writing, all based on the lives of the students onstage.
We read So You Wanna Be a Cheerleader in class and it resonated so strongly with the students that we decided to include it tonight as well. The students performing this piece also contributed heavily to the writing of Girls Room. By taking on this additional show, our students strengthened their understanding of the context clues a playwright leaves for their future actors.
These students have worked so hard to bring you this evening of theatre. I would like to personally thank each and every one of your children who have put their whole heart into this show. Their passion, dedication and growth is what makes the long nights worth it to me as a teacher.
Gratefully yours,
