A vast part of the adolescent experience revolves around friendship and acceptance. High school students spend a large portion of their time in and away from school navigating complex relationships and finding their place in the world. As a teacher and a director of educational theatre I understand the need for students to feel accepted and to find that special friend that will get them through it all.
Shrek the Musical speaks to these exact themes in a humorous, musical, entertaining, and very touching way. Through these loveable and quirky characters, we are reminded that being unique should be celebrated and that our friends will always be there for us. These messages were one of the initial reasons that I chose Shrek this year. Beyond the themes, I was drawn to Shrek for all of the experiences it could offer our students. Performers would experience creating and playing unique, yet familiar, characters while putting their own original perspective on the role. Technical students would also gain new experiences in projection, puppetry, special effects, make-up design, and more.
A theatrical production, especially a musical as large as Shrek, is truly a labor of love. There are so many people that have made this production a success. I am honored to continue to direct a committed group of students and work with a dedicated group of adults, alumni and parents to produce these shows.
My sincere thanks goes out to the following people:

You have brought a beautiful fairy tale to life. Congratulations on a great show! To the parents of the cast and crew- thank you for volunteering for all of the jobs that needed to be done. And thank you for supporting your students through the show and for raising such wonderful, polite young adults. They are a pleasure to direct.
To Michael– Thank you for the many things, large and small, you do to bring the show to the stage. Thank you for designing another amazing set and embracing all of the challenges that came with this production. Your attention to detail, grand vision, and endless effort always brings us to the finish line! I know I can always count on you! Here's to "another opening, another show." I couldn't do it without you, and I wouldn't want to.
A final thank you to you, the audience- thank you for your support of live theatre and, even more importantly, your support of educational theatre.
We hope that you enjoy the show and let your freak flag fly!
