42nd Street - March 21 - March 24, 2019

Forsyth Central High School

 Director's Notes

“Come and meet, those dancing feet!”

When one thinks of the theatre, one of the first words that come to mind is Broadway!  What better way to celebrate the dreams of The Great White Way and all its excitement than with the classic, 42nd Street.  This musical is the quintessential showbiz story about life’s dreams, disappointments, and the payoff of hard work and determination.  The story, as seen through the eyes of Peggy Sawyer, represents the aspirations and experiences of so many young performers of the past, present and the future. With real commitment, fortitude, and a kind heart, dreams are possible. High energy tap dancing, memorable melodies and show stopping scenes are what makes this show an all-time classic and we are proud to present it to you.

There are numerous people to thank in this production. I first must thank the cast and crew.  I couldn’t be prouder of the dedication, sweat, tired feet, and long hours these students have given to this challenging show. “ Love you guys!” This ultimate dance show would be nothing without the tireless efforts of our choreographer, Bonnie Buck Dixon (FCHS Class of ’99).  Her love of dance and energy for teaching have made 42nd Street a reality as well as establishing a place in the hearts of the Forsyth Central Stage family. Thanks also goes to Amy Neal as our Music Director for her masterful help in teaching the music to the cast and always lending a supportive hand to all productions. Thanks to Larren Murphy Holt, Class of ’95 and Evan Shoemake, Class of ’95 for the monumental task of costuming 42nd street. I feel honored and thrilled that FCHS Theatre Alumni are willing to take time out of their busy schedules to once again be a part of the Central Stage. To all the POPA Board members and parent volunteers, THANK YOU for your tireless efforts in helping to produce this show and all shows. Lastly, I have to lovingly thank my wife, Lenore, and daughters, Emily and Anna for all their encouragement and support through the long days and late hours that are “Theatre”.

As an educator and director, my goal is to always provide opportunities for students and their audiences to walk away having learned something, thinking about something new or feeling something.  I feel it’s called educational theatre for a reason and the magic of theatre can transcend the classroom or just a fleeting moment on stage. The lessons and realities learned in this crazy process are life lasting and sometimes life changing.  I thank you for coming to share this experience with us and hope to see you again soon!

Best,

Kevin Whitley
