Disney's Moana JR - May 01 - May 03, 2025

Founders Hall Middle School

 Director's Notes

WELCOME to the island of Motonui and our production of Disney's MOANA, Jr!

This is my 5th year producing and directing the Founders' Hall musical, and my love and appreciation for this incredible opportunity grows more every year! I am extraordinarily proud of these energetic and dedicated student-actors, and so excited to be able to present them to all of YOU!

For me, the story of MOANA is a valuable lesson, which is completely relevant in our constantly evolving, frequently crazy world. It's the story of a young, somewhat naive, teenaged girl who loves her family and her (island) nation; sent on a mission to "Restore the heart" of her people, and bring hope back with her. Along the way she meets a down-on-his-luck guy (MAUI) who has been harmed by dark forces. Together, however, they form a strong alliance and restore both MAUI's conficence, his capabilities, and MOANA's world.

This live-action musical is a little different from the original Disney movie MOANA (2016). In order to emphasize the actual actors playing the roles (instead of computer animated "Cartoon" characters), this show is more about the relationships between the characters instead of relying on fully developed action sequences. I think, however, the relationships displayed, by our excellent cast, make our production shine!

Choosing a show to produce is NOT an easy task! There are always variables which cannot be seen or expected. Casting, also, is a difficult process which I take quite seriously. My staff and I cast roles based (almost completely) on the students' actual auditions. This year, like no year before, saw a large number of kids who studied the roles ahead of time, and literally ACTED through their auditions. As a result of the kids' preparation, we agreed completely on the casting of the larger roles. In addition, I worked very hard to assure that each of my 33 actors had at least one solo singing, speaking, or dancing moment in the show!

I owe THANKS to so many people... school staff: administrators, custodians, maintenance, food service workers, secretaries, teachers... the list is longer than you can imagine! Parents/guardians who supplied meals, snacks, transportation, costumes, their time and, most importantly, the use of their children! My staff: not only do we work well together, but these people are MY trusted FRIENDS! Without their presence, I would not want to do this. Lastly, but certainly most importantly, my wonderful students: I am an admittedly emotional man... I am able, comfortable with, and willing to express my gratitude and my love. And to THESE KIDS, I give my endless gratitude and my love! I am, in every way, one of the luckiest men on this planet!

THANKS to all of you for coming, and for supporting our kids, and our cause!

Please ENJOY Disney's MOANA, Jr! And join us next year as we proudly present:

You'll just have to wait and see..!
