Freeport High School

  Director's Notes

Almost 50 years ago, in 1970, Freeport High School put up a wonderful production of OLIVER!  Remember when the names of Lloyd, Nelson, Baumgartner and Doolittle graced the floors of Jeanette Lloyd theatre, continuing that Freeport tradition of quality musical theatre for the community. The memories run deep…and the stories continue…bringing us to today’s Summer University Community production of OLIVER!  The names have changed now, but the questions remain…

“Where is love?”. This eternal question whether biblical or in contemporary terms can be a test of faith and hope. In our musical story tonight, young Oliver must face the tragedy and loss of love at birth, then travel the winding roads of London in the 18th century attempting to find love again. What LIFE has in store for such an innocent is the basis of the Broadway hit musical OLIVER!

Enjoy the wonderful characters who come alive prancing upon this stage of life!  With an award-winning musical score and lyrics that reveal good and evil at every turn, Oliver must navigate life’s traps and snares in order to make it back home safely. What faith, what hope! And in the end, good triumphs again and love remains eternal.

There’s is so much to be thankful for with this production of OLIVER! The staff of D145, the teachers, the students, the producers, the directors, and benefactors who took the risk to make a positive impact in our community! While fostering new talent, that one day will carry the new torch in the tradition of musical theatre in Freeport! KUDOS to all of you!  NEVER give up on your dreams.
